Eyelash extensions pose risks to ocular health

Ophthalmologists and dermatologists are warning of potential health risks associated with the increasing popularity of eyelash extensions. While the procedure promises longer and more voluminous lashes, specialists note a rise in patients presenting with ocular issues ranging from mild irritation to serious infections.

Key risks identified by experts include allergic reactions, inflammation of the eyelids, and irritation caused by the adhesives used to fix synthetic fibers. Dermatologist Elise Taniguchi Muller, from the Hospital dos Olhos de Blumenau, notes that these substances can cause significant discomfort and potentially irritate the cornea, leading to symptoms such as photophobia and blurred vision.

Additionally, the artificial lashes can hinder proper hygiene, creating an environment where dirt, bacteria, and mites accumulate. This buildup can contribute to conditions such as intense itching, redness, and blepharitis.
