Turkish officials suspended following municipal corruption arrests

The Turkish Ministry of Interior has suspended five municipal officials from duty following a series of corruption and organized crime investigations. The officials include Eyüpsultan Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen, Ataşehir Deputy Mayor Murat Güneş, Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit, Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer, and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer.

In Mersin, investigations into the Metropolitan, Yenişehir, and Mezitli municipalities have led to the arrest of several officials. Allegations include bribery, fraud to the detriment of public institutions, and membership in a criminal organization. In the Mersin operations, dozens of suspects were detained, with several mayors and local officials being taken into custody.

In Istanbul, Eyüpsultan Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen and Ataşehir Deputy Mayor Murat Güneş were also arrested on charges related to bribery and organized crime. The Ministry of Interior implemented these suspensions as temporary measures in accordance with the Municipal Law and the Constitution. Local political leaders have expressed concern regarding the fairness of the judicial processes and the impact on elected officials.
