ČEZ advances Temelín SMR project with environmental filing

ČEZ has advanced its plans for a new small modular reactor (SMR) at the Temelín Nuclear Power Station by submitting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) documentation to the Czech Ministry of the Environment. The project involves installing a 470-megawatt Rolls-Royce SMR technology reactor. The company expects the EIA process to conclude by the end of next year.

ČEZ has established a strategic partnership with the British company Rolls-Royce SMR, holding approximately a 20 percent stake in the firm. Beyond Temelín, the energy company is considering additional SMR sites in Dětmarovice and Tušimice. The company anticipates that these modular reactors will provide long-term opportunities for Czech businesses within the global supply chain.

The documentation addresses environmental concerns, including water availability and land use. The project is expected to require a permanent land occupation of 30 hectares and a maximum annual water consumption of 12 million cubic meters for cooling. ČEZ aims to have the reactor operational by the mid-2030s.
