Ezra Creek wildfire near Castlegar held to 116 hectares

The Ezra Creek wildfire, located on Mount Sentinel north of Castlegar, was held to 116 hectares overnight on Wednesday. While earlier aerial estimates suggested the blaze covered up to 300 hectares, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) revised the size downward following more accurate mapping.

The lightning-caused fire experienced significant growth on Wednesday afternoon due to thunderstorms, high temperatures, low humidity, and southerly winds that pushed flames north along the ridgeline. During this period, fire behaviour reached rank 3 to rank 4, indicating moderately to highly vigorous surface fire activity.

Suppression efforts included the use of nine airtankers, including Q400 and CL-215T skimmer models, to apply water and retardant. Retardant lines established along the eastern flank successfully prevented downslope growth. While ground access remains limited, helicopters are being used to transport personnel and equipment. Currently, no structures or infrastructure are reported to be under threat.
