An F-16 Fighting Falcon belonging to the Texas Air National Guard's 149th Fighter Wing crashed in a rural area of Blair Township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan, on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The aircraft was participating in routine training exercises as part of Operation Northern Cactus, operating out of the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft before impact and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities reported the pilot is in stable condition and was conscious when speaking to law enforcement.

Following the crash, which produced a large fireball and a significant plume of black smoke, local authorities issued an evacuation order for residents within a one-mile radius of the site due to the risk of hazardous chemical leaks and potential ammunition explosions.

While an official cause has not been confirmed, air traffic control audio suggests the possibility of a bird strike. Military officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
