F-22 Raptor receives stealth upgrades and new sensors

The F-22 Raptor is undergoing significant upgrades to address long-standing operational weaknesses and maintain air superiority until sixth-generation fighters arrive in the 2030s. Recent sightings have revealed the aircraft equipped with specialized stealth external fuel tanks and new sensor pods.

One major enhancement is the addition of Infrared Search-and-Track (IRST) capabilities via new sensor modules. This feature was originally omitted from the design due to post-Cold War budget constraints, leaving the Raptor at a disadvantage compared to aircraft like the Su-57 and J-20 in autonomous target identification. These new pods provide essential optical targeting and scanning capabilities.

Additionally, the upgrades address the Raptor’s limited combat radius. While the standard configuration offers a range of approximately 1,093 kilometers, the new stealth fuel tanks extend this reach to 1,575 kilometers. Future sensor pods may also enhance electronic warfare capabilities and facilitate coordination with Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), such as unmanned drones from Anduril and General Atomics.
