F-35 fighter jet acquisition costs rise due to inflation and development

The acquisition costs for the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet have increased significantly due to inflation and development requirements. For the United States, the Pentagon's total acquisition estimate for the program has risen from US$ 485.2 billion to approximately US$ 536.2 billion, an increase of about 10.51%. This rise is attributed to inflation and roughly US$ 900 million in research and development costs for the Block 4 upgrades, as well as investments in future radar technology.

The price hike also impacts international customers. In the Czech Republic, the cost of the F-35A version has risen by 11.5%, from an original US$ 82.5 million to US$ 92 million per aircraft. Because the Czech defense contract does not feature a fixed purchase price, the ministry will likely face billions in additional costs. The Czech Republic's planned order of 24 aircraft is expected to begin delivery in 2029, with full operational capabilities targeted for 2035.
