F-35 fighter jets to bolster South Florida security near Cuba

The planned deployment of 24 F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to the Homestead Air Reserve Base in South Florida is adding a new dimension to the tensions between the United States and Cuba. The fifth-generation aircraft, which features advanced stealth technology, sensors, and data integration, is intended to replace the F-16s currently operating at the base.

U.S. Representative Carlos Giménez defended the transition, noting that the F-35’s ability to evade radar detection and its superior intelligence-gathering capabilities provide a strategic advantage. Giménez stated that the presence of these aircraft would be particularly unsettling for the Cuban government due to their proximity to the island and the aircraft's ability to conduct surveillance without being detected. He characterized the Cuban regime as a security threat to the United States, justifying the need for enhanced military presence in the region.
