BAE Systems secures order for F-35 electronic warfare systems
BAE Systems has received a new order from Lockheed Martin to supply the AN/ASQ-239 electronic warfare system for the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet program. This contract covers the production of three upcoming batches of aircraft, designated Lots 20, 21, and 22, as well as providing necessary upgrades for older F-35 models currently in service.
The AN/ASQ-239 system provides pilots with a 360-degree view of the electromagnetic battlespace, allowing for the detection and analysis of threats across a wide range of frequencies. By utilizing passive sensors, the system can monitor surroundings without broadcasting signals that might reveal the aircraft's position. This capability enables early warning and the deployment of electronic countermeasures to interfere with hostile sensors or assist in evasion.
This integration is a key component of the F-35 ‘Block 4’ modernization program, which aims to enhance weaponry, communications, and navigation. While the modernization schedule has faced delays and cost increases, BAE Systems continues to utilize automation and new designs to maintain production in its Texas and New Hampshire facilities.
