F-35 stealth components diverted to Hong Kong during transit

The Pentagon and the U.S. Congress have launched investigations following the disappearance of sensitive F-35 fighter jet components. During a shipment from Australia to the United States this summer, a cargo of parts intended for repairs was unexpectedly redirected to Hong Kong while in transit over the Pacific.

The missing shipment reportedly included at least one acrylic cockpit canopy featuring specialized stealth coating designed to reduce radar detection. This technology is highly classified and restricted to the United States and its allies. There are significant concerns within the U.S. government that the components could fall into the hands of the Chinese government, potentially allowing adversaries to study and replicate advanced stealth capabilities.

The Pentagon is currently working to recover the components and prevent future logistical failures. This incident follows a 2023 GAO report noting that over one million F-35 spare parts have gone missing over the previous five years, highlighting ongoing challenges in the program's logistics management.
