F-35A production advances for Germany and Switzerland

Lockheed Martin has announced significant progress in the production and delivery schedules for F-35A Lightning II fighter jets destined for Germany and Switzerland.

In Germany, the first aircraft, designated MG-01, has transitioned from final assembly to the Aircraft Final Finishes stage at the Fort Worth, Texas facility. This phase involves applying stealth coatings and external paint. Germany has ordered 35 F-35As through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program to replace its Panavia Tornado fleet, supporting both NATO nuclear sharing and conventional multi-role missions. The aircraft is expected to undergo its official rollout and first flight by the end of 2026, with initial units heading to the Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas for pilot and technician training.

For Switzerland, production is also advancing. Components for the first Swiss F-35A are being manufactured in Cameri, Italy, at a Leonardo facility. The first aircraft is scheduled for transfer to Switzerland in mid-2028, with the specific airframe J-6004 expected to arrive by late 2029. To prepare for the new fleet, the first eight F-35As assigned to Switzerland will be deployed to the Ebbing Air National Guard Base in mid-2027 for training purposes.
