FAA conducts first remote-piloted eVTOL cargo flight in Louisiana
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has conducted the first remote-piloted flight under its eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) at the Houma-Terrebonne Airport in Louisiana. This demonstration, a collaborative effort between Elroy Air and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, aims to gather critical data to transition advanced air mobility concepts from testing to real-world implementation.
The aircraft used in the test, named Chaparral, is an unmanned vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicle designed specifically for cargo transport. It utilizes a hybrid-electric propulsion system, featuring eight propellers for vertical flight and four for cruise. According to Elroy Air, the aircraft can carry over 500 pounds (approximately 227 kg), reach a range of 450 miles (724 km), and maintain a cruise speed of about 115 knots. The hybrid system is intended to allow operations in areas with limited infrastructure by reducing reliance on purely electric charging requirements.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated that the demonstration provides data intended to move these concepts “from test to implementation.” The agency plans to use the findings to identify regulatory gaps, improve procedures, and facilitate the integration of advanced air mobility into the National Airspace System.
