FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau to Step Down Amid Ongoing Safety Reforms
Deputy FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau, who led the agency’s response to the fatal January 2025 collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet that killed 67 people near Reagan Washington National Airport, will leave his post next week for a new opportunity. The FAA’s general counsel, Liam McKenna, is set to serve as acting deputy administrator.
The National Transportation Safety Board concluded the crash was caused by the FAA’s decision to allow helicopters to operate close to the airport without adequate separation safeguards and by the agency’s failure to act on data and prior safety recommendations. The board noted that since 2021 there have been over 15,200 instances of commercial aircraft and helicopters coming within one nautical mile laterally and 400 feet vertically of one another at Reagan Airport.
Since the collision, the FAA has revised helicopter routes at several airports, suspended visual separation between airplanes and helicopters near major airports, and barred Army helicopter flights around the Pentagon after a May 2025 close‑call. In January, the agency announced a restructuring that created a new safety‑oversight office, a safety management system and an agency‑wide safety‑risk‑management process.
