FAA drone rules for IndyCar race and news gathering spark security and First Amendment concerns

The race will run within 1,400 feet of the Capitol and a turn adjacent to the FBI headquarters, prompting homeland‑security experts to warn that the United States lacks sufficient capability to detect and counter rogue drones in the highly restricted airspace.

The National Press Photographers Association has filed comments on the FAA’s proposed rule changes that would broaden drone restrictions over critical‑infrastructure sites. The NPPA argues the rules could impede First Amendment‑protected newsgathering, citing prior DHS temporary flight restrictions that hampered journalism, and calls for narrowly‑tailored limits, periodic reviews, and clear appeal mechanisms.
