FAA expands drone integration program amid rising counter-UAS challenges

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expanding its BEYOND drone program into a second phase, aiming to double its size by adding up to eight new state, local, tribal, and territorial participants. This initiative, supported by the Department of Transportation, seeks to integrate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) more routinely into the National Airspace System by testing complex operations under real-world conditions.

As drone technology advances, new challenges are emerging in defense and detection. Inexpensive unmanned systems are complicating the cost-effectiveness of traditional counter-UAS defenses. Furthermore, the rise of autonomous and fiber-optic-guided drones presents a technical hurdle, as these systems can operate without the radio-frequency emissions that conventional jamming and detection methods rely upon.
