A major air traffic control equipment failure caused widespread flight disruptions across the northeastern United States on Monday. The incident began when a primary communication circuit at the Philadelphia TRACON facility failed. When the system attempted to switch to its backup, officials discovered that a backup fiber-optic cable in New Jersey had been accidentally severed during construction work by an Amtrak contractor.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops and flight restrictions for several major airports, including John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, Teterboro, and Philadelphia. The disruption resulted in approximately 7,000 flight delays or cancellations nationwide, with the New York area being particularly hard hit. At Newark Liberty, at least 107 flights were diverted to 34 different airports.

The outage occurred as world leaders and diplomats were arriving in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy noted that the incident highlights the urgent need for increased funding to modernize the nation’s aging air traffic control infrastructure. While some operations at LaGuardia and Philadelphia began to resume, officials warned that repairs to the fiber-optic line could take up to 13 hours.
