FAA orders inspections of 471 Boeing 737 MAX jets for structural cracks
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an airworthiness directive that will take effect on 10 September. It requires mandatory inspections of roughly 471 U.S.-registered Boeing 737 MAX 8, 9 and 8‑200 aircraft for potential fatigue cracks in a fuselage reinforcement near the forward service door on the right side of the plane.
Airlines must inspect the specified area according to schedules based on each aircraft’s flight hours and usage. Any cracks found must be repaired before the airplane can return to service. The FAA did not order the fleet to be grounded, stating that the inspection intervals provide multiple opportunities to detect damage before it compromises structural integrity.
Boeing is conducting a technical analysis of the cause and is working on design changes for future production. The directive follows earlier FAA actions on the 737 family, including 2019 inspections of 737 NG models for similar cracking and a 2024 investigation of a door‑plug failure on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX.
While the directive applies to U.S.-registered aircraft, other national aviation authorities are expected to adopt comparable measures.
