FAA launches MedGuide for pilot and controller medication safety
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched MedGuide, a searchable online tool designed to assist US pilots and air traffic controllers in managing medication use. The guide provides information on both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, specifically detailing waiting periods required before returning to duty after taking a medication.
The initial version of the tool focuses on medications categorized by the FAA as allowed. Future updates are expected to include conditionally acceptable and unacceptable medications. The FAA noted that a drug’s absence from the guide does not necessarily mean it cannot be used, and the tool is intended as a reference rather than a substitute for professional medical advice.
Generally, starting a new medication requires a 48-hour observation period before resuming safety-related duties, though specific drugs may require different durations. The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) stated that the tool helps address information gaps regarding medication restrictions and empowers aviators to make safer, fit-for-flight decisions.
