FAA reverses decision to close Indianapolis Downtown Heliport
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reversed its previous decision to allow the closure of the Indianapolis Downtown Heliport (8A4). The agency has directed the Indianapolis Airport Authority to maintain the 5.36-acre property for public aviation use, effectively blocking plans to sell the site for non-aviation redevelopment.
The Indianapolis Airport Authority had sought to close the facility in 2021, citing high operating costs and declining helicopter activity. The city had also eyed the property for a potential soccer stadium to attract a Major League Soccer franchise. However, the FAA’s revised determination emphasized the importance of preserving infrastructure for emerging technologies, such as electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and other advanced air mobility operations.
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita supported the reversal, stating it is a win for public safety and future aviation. Conversely, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett criticized the decision, arguing it does not reflect the priorities or interests of the city's residents. Business owner Chuck Surack, who has advocated for the heliport, expressed interest in purchasing and restoring the site to maintain its operations.
