FAA targets gamers to address air traffic controller shortage

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is launching a recruitment campaign targeting video game enthusiasts to help address the air traffic controller shortage. Authorities believe that gaming can foster essential professional skills, including spatial orientation, rapid decision-making, multitasking, and the ability to manage complex interfaces and real-time communication.

While the FAA notes that skills developed in complex simulators, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, may be particularly relevant, officials emphasize that gaming experience alone is not sufficient for employment. Candidates must still complete a rigorous official selection and training process, which can take several years, with only a small percentage of applicants achieving full certification. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that over 2,000 individuals have been hired this year as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the controller deficit.
