FAAN clarifies e-hailing status at Nigerian airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that it has not imposed a blanket ban on e-hailing services like Uber and Bolt at Nigerian airports. The authority stated that ongoing discussions with operators are intended to establish a regulatory framework to improve passenger safety, security, and operational visibility.

Recent restrictions at major hubs, including Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, have reportedly led to transport fare increases of over 50 per cent as passengers shift to traditional airport taxis. FAAN explained that the measures are necessary to ensure all commercial transport providers are identifiable and accountable within the highly regulated airport environment.

FAAN also addressed concerns regarding the Airport Car Hire Rank Management System (ACHRAMS), clarifying that it is not a competing e-hailing application but a tool designed for operational tracking and managing airport-related charges. The authority is working to develop a mutually workable arrangement that balances the convenience of ride-hailing services with airport security and traffic management requirements.
