Sally Rooney books withdrawn from UK market over Palestine Action support

Irish novelist Sally Rooney’s books are being withdrawn from sale in the United Kingdom after her publisher, Faber & Faber, determined that continuing distribution would violate anti-terrorism laws. The decision follows Rooney’s pledge to donate royalties from her works, including ‘Normal People’ and ‘Intermezzo’, to Palestine Action, a direct-action group the UK government proscribed as a terrorist organization in July 2025.

Faber & Faber stated that the current legislation prevents the publisher from legally passing on UK earnings to Rooney, describing the inability to pay a writer for their work as an ‘unconscionable situation’. While new supplies are being halted, existing physical stock may still be available in some shops.

More than 150 prominent figures, including Nobel laureates Annie Ernaux and Anne Carson, as well as actors Paul Mescal and Tilda Swinton, signed an open letter published in the New Statesman condemning the move. The signatories characterized the withdrawal as an affront to free speech and described the anti-terror legislation as ‘draconian’ and a ‘repressive absurdity’.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham defended the proscription of Palestine Action, stating it followed a ‘rigorous and evidence-based process’. The group is currently appealing the ban, and the UK Supreme Court is expected to hear a case regarding the proscription in the coming weeks.
