Fabio Arturo Iannotti's Study Links Gut Microbiota to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Researchers led by Fabio Arturo Iannotti at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry of the National Research Council (CNR‑ICB) in Pozzuoli have identified a specific gut‑microbiota signature associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The study found that bacteria of the genus Bacteroides produce metabolites, notably commendamide, that are markedly reduced in both mouse models and human patients with DMD. These metabolites appear to support muscle function and protect against degeneration, establishing a microbiota‑muscle communication axis.

Although the findings are pre‑clinical, they suggest that restoring a balanced gut microbiome or supplementing key bacterial metabolites could become a complementary strategy alongside existing corticosteroid and gene‑therapy approaches for this currently incurable rare disease.
