Fabio De Furia highlights Italy's technology transfer challenges
Fabio De Furia, president of the Miami Scientific Italian Community, has noted the significant gap between Italy's scientific output and its industrial application. Speaking at the XIII InnovAzioni National Innovation Festival, De Furia emphasized that while Italy ranks eleventh globally for patent filings and shows exponential growth in scientific publications, it struggles to convert this research into industrial fabric.
In contrast, the United States utilizes technology transfer as a massive industrial engine, contributing an estimated one trillion dollars to the US GDP and supporting over 6 million jobs between 1996 and 2020. De Furia pointed to the integrated economic pillars in American universities, where patent commercialization is central, supported by venture capital and strong intellectual property protections. Similar successful dynamics were noted in France and the United Kingdom, where the University of Cambridge alone generates nearly 30 billion pounds for the British economy through knowledge transfer.
