Fabio Mussi: Legacy of scientific research defense and institutional integrity

Tributes are being paid to the late Fabio Mussi, former Italian Minister of University and Research, highlighting his institutional integrity and defense of scientific freedom.

During his tenure in the Prodi government (2006–2008), Mussi was noted for his commitment to research autonomy. A significant political action included Italy withdrawing its adherence to an ethical declaration in Brussels that opposed EU funding for embryonic stem cell research. This move was recognized by the international scientific community as vital for biomedical progress, despite causing political tension within his own coalition.

Colleagues have also praised his professional conduct. Giorgio Girelli, Emeritus President of the Rossini Conservatory, recalled Mussi’s respect for institutional processes during appointments, noting that the Minister prioritized local administrative consultation over partisan interests.
