Fabio Mussi, former Italian minister and left-wing leader, dies at 78

Fabio Mussi, a prominent figure in the Italian left and former Minister of University and Research in the second Prodi government, has died at the age of 78. He passed away at the Sant’Eugenio hospital in Rome.

Mussi had a long and influential political career, beginning as a young member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in the 1960s. He later served as a Member of Parliament for several legislatures, held the position of Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, and worked in journalism as a director for publications such as L’Unità and Rinascita.

He is notably remembered for his decision in 2007 not to join the Democratic Party (PD), famously stating, “Io mi fermo qui” (I stop here), a move that led him to help found Sinistra Democratica, SEL, and eventually Sinistra Italiana. Political leaders, including Romano Prodi and Nicola Fratoianni, have praised his intellectual depth, his early advocacy for environmental issues within the left, and his political consistency.
