Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha face tension over development roles
Tensions have escalated between MotoGP rider Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha following the Grand Prix weekend at MotorLand Aragón. Quartararo, who is set to leave the Japanese manufacturer after the 2026 season, has expressed a refusal to contribute to long-term development projects intended for 2027.
The rider stated he no longer wishes to act as a ‘test rider’ for components that offer insufficient improvements, noting that constant testing during race weekends hinders his ability to focus on competition. This stance follows Yamaha's decision to prevent him from participating in a planned Pirelli tire test at the Red Bull Ring.
Yamaha leadership has responded publicly to the friction. Senior official Paolo Pavesio criticized Quartararo for a perceived lack of objectivity regarding the team's development direction. Additionally, Massimo Meregalli suggested that Quartararo should emulate the professionalism of Jack Miller, who continues to work fully with his team despite his future being outside the organization.
