Fable developers aim for accessible yet deep combat system
Developers at Playground Games have revealed that the combat system in the new Fable title aims to balance accessibility with depth, staying true to the series' heritage. According to Associate Director Will Kennedy, the goal is to maintain the easy-to-understand mechanics of the original games while introducing layers of complexity and environmental interaction.
Specific gameplay details include targeted archery, where hitting a Hollow enemy in the leg causes it to crawl, or decapitating an enemy, which causes ranged attackers to fire arrows erratically in all directions. Magic also features unique interactions; for instance, the Befowl spell transforms Hollow creatures into undead chickens, and using a Fireball on a chicken results in a roasted chicken.
Beyond combat, the developers emphasized that the game will not rely solely on fighting. Some missions will prioritize dialogue choices or the game's reputation system over physical confrontation.
