Fabrican sprayable fabric technology finds medical applications

A polymer‑based material called Fabrican, originally demonstrated as a sprayable fabric on the runway at Paris Fashion Week 2022, has been repurposed for medical uses. Developed by designer and researcher Dr. Manel Torres, the material consists of a suspension of natural and synthetic polymers such as wool, cotton and nylon blended with solvents. When aerosolised, the suspension remains fluid until the solvent evaporates, causing the coating to solidify into a flexible, durable film.

Fabrican is now being used to produce bandages, orthopedic casts, transdermal adhesive patches and smart sensors capable of monitoring heart‑rate data. The shift from fashion spectacle to public‑health utility illustrates how artistic innovation can drive material‑science advances with multifunctional applications.
