Facebook and WhatsApp security: managing sessions and unauthorized access

Users of major social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp can identify various security indicators and management steps to protect their accounts from unauthorized access.

On Facebook, unexpected logouts are often a security measure rather than an error. These occur when temporary session data, such as cookies, expires or fails to match security controls. Changes to account security, such as updating a password or enabling two-step authentication, will also trigger session closures to prevent unauthorized access from old devices.

For WhatsApp, signs of potential compromise include unrecognized linked devices, notifications of new equipment connections, messages appearing as read without user interaction, or unexpected requests to re-register a phone number. Users are advised to regularly check the “Linked Devices” section within the app to review and terminate any sessions they do not recognize.
