Facebook Like button history and evolution

The Facebook ‘Like’ button, officially introduced in February 2009, has become a fundamental element of digital communication. Developed starting in 2007 by a team led by Justin Rosenstein and including product manager Leah Pearlman, the feature was designed to allow users to express interest in posts quickly without the need for written comments.

The concept proved highly successful, evolving into a universal internet language used to signal approval or recognition. Its influence extended beyond Facebook, with similar interaction models being adopted by platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

As social media usage grew, the limitations of a single ‘Like’ button became apparent. While users frequently requested a ‘Dislike’ option, Facebook opted for a broader approach in 2016 by introducing five specific reactions: ‘Love’, ‘Haha’, ‘Wow’, ‘Sad’, and ‘Angry’, while retaining the original ‘Like’ button as a primary option.
