Facebook Marketplace scams target users in Argentina
Multiple reports highlight a rise in fraudulent activities occurring through Facebook Marketplace in Argentina.
In Paraná, Caetano Ríos reported losing 5 million pesos from his Lemon Cash virtual wallet while attempting to purchase a 2008 Volkswagen Gol Power. Ríos noted inconsistencies in the seller's information, including conflicting locations between the advertisement and contact numbers. His father had previously transferred 450,000 pesos as a down payment. The case has been referred to the Economic Crimes department.
Separately, a 25-year-old university student in Santiago reported being defrauded of 710,000 pesos during an attempt to buy an iPhone. The victim made two transfers to a third-party bank alias before the seller blocked all communication. The local Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation to trace the recipient accounts and the phone line used in the transaction.
