FACIAS sues Romanian Government over Pfizer debt
The Foundation for the Defense of Citizens Against State Abuses (FACIAS) has initiated legal action against the Romanian Government, demanding the recovery of over 600 million euros in damages related to a Pfizer contract. The foundation argues that the Executive has an obligation to protect the public budget and hold those responsible for the loss accountable.
The Government, represented by Ilie Bolojan, has requested the dismissal of the action, contending that current laws do not mandate the initiation of proceedings to hold specific individuals liable. This legal dispute follows a decision by an arbitration court in Brussels on April 1, 2026, which ruled that Romania must pay approximately 600 million euros to Pfizer for uncollected vaccines, a figure increased by late payment interest.
The Bucharest Court of Appeal is scheduled to issue a ruling on the case on October 30, 2026. Regardless of the outcome, FACIAS intends to urge future governments to pursue legal measures to identify and penalize those responsible for the financial prejudice.
