Factors influencing solar panel efficiency and orientation

Solar panel efficiency and energy output are influenced by several environmental and technical factors, including panel quality, sunlight availability, roof position, shading, temperature, and system design.

In the United Kingdom, a south-facing orientation is generally considered ideal for maximizing sunlight capture as the sun moves along a southern arc. However, modern technology allows for effective energy generation on other orientations. For example, east-facing panels can maximize morning production, while west-facing panels favor the afternoon. Even east or west-facing roofs can often achieve 80-90% of the output of a south-facing installation.

Other critical factors include the pitch and angle of the panels, as well as the amount of annual solar exposure. While direct sunlight typically produces more power, solar cells can still operate during overcast conditions. Effective system design and maintenance are also essential for ensuring a high return on investment and maximizing the electricity generated from available roof space.
