Factory fire with explosions engulfs Washington, Tyne and Wear industrial estate

A large blaze broke out at the Crowther Industrial Estate in Washington, Tyne and Wear, producing thick black smoke that could be seen for miles. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions and loud bangs.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service dispatched five fire appliances and an aerial ladder platform, while Northumbria Police established a cordon and supported the firefighting effort. The fire service warned the public to avoid the area and to keep windows and doors closed, noting a high volume of emergency calls due to the visible smoke on the A1, A194 and Sunderland Highway.

A resident near the site said, "I've heard several explosions and loud bangs this afternoon," and the fire service posted, "We have five appliances and an aerial ladder platform in attendance at a factory fire in Crowther Industrial Estate, Washington, Tyne and Wear."
