U.S. Department of Education opens 2027-2028 FAFSA applications
The U.S. Department of Education has opened the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2027-2028 academic year. The application period covers the timeframe from July 1, 2027, to June 30, 2028, and will utilize 2025 tax information for processing.
Completing the FAFSA allows students to access various forms of federal assistance, including Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study programs, and federal student loans. Many universities and state programs also utilize this data to determine eligibility for additional financial aid.
For immigrant families, the process allows contributors without a Social Security Number to participate by creating an account on the official StudentAid.gov portal. Those with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) can use it in the designated field. While the immigration status of parents is considered, eligibility for federal aid is primarily determined by the student's own immigration status.
