FAI appoints David Courell as chief executive amid Israel fixture scrutiny
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has appointed David Courell as its new chief executive. Courell assumes leadership during a period of scrutiny regarding the association’s handling of upcoming fixtures involving Israel.
Courell confirmed that UEFA rejected a request from the FAI to be kept apart from Israel in future tournament draws. He also stated that the governing body made no threats regarding Ireland’s hosting duties for Euro 2028 in relation to potential boycotts of Nations League matches.
Due to the sensitive nature of the upcoming match in Serbia, several protocol changes have been implemented. The game will feature “Respect messaging” instead of standard advertising, and sponsors will be excluded from official backdrops. Additionally, media coverage will be scaled back, with RTÉ utilizing a UEFA-provided feed rather than deploying its own studio or commentators.
