FAI President defends decision to play Israel in Nations League fixture

Football Association of Ireland (FAI) President Paul Cooke has defended the organization’s management of recent controversies surrounding a Nations League fixture against Israel. The match, which took place in Hungary, resulted in a 3-0 victory for the Republic of Ireland.

The fixture faced significant tension after goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from selection, stating on Instagram that he felt it would be ‘wrong to participate’. This prompted an emergency summit and a squad vote, where a ‘significant majority’ of players voted to proceed with the match. The decision followed an FAI general assembly vote on July 8, where a motion passed to fulfill obligations to play Israel while acknowledging support for Palestine.

Cooke praised the squad’s composure and courage, stating, ‘I think we’ve handled the week quite well.’ He also addressed media scrutiny, criticizing a perceived lack of balanced reporting. The FAI noted that failing to fulfill the fixture could have resulted in undetermined disciplinary measures from UEFA.
