Faial experiences gastroenteritis outbreak with over 400 cases

More than 400 cases of acute gastroenteritis have been recorded at the Hospital da Horta in Faial, Azores, between July 1 and August 12. This represents a significant increase compared to the 90 cases reported during the same period last year.

Health authorities in Horta have launched an investigation to identify the causative agent. While samples and analyses are being conducted on various potential sources, health delegate Armando Faria stated there is currently “no evidence” linking the outbreak to the consumption of public water. The clinical profile is consistent with a highly transmissible but typically benign viral gastroenteritis, with most cases being mild and resolving spontaneously.

Hospital officials have advised the public to practice frequent handwashing and to avoid consuming food that is expired or of questionable quality. In cases of fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, residents are encouraged to maintain hydration and contact the Azores Health Line.
