Faistos Municipality Mobilises Shelters for Wildfire Evacuees
A large wildfire in southern Rethymno forced residents and tourists to leave the coastal area of Agia Galini. The municipality of Faistos activated emergency plans, opening its closed gym as an initial temporary shelter and later using the second elementary school to accommodate additional people.
The response was coordinated with the Civil Protection Authority, the regional governor Stavros Arnaoutakis, deputy regional governor Nikos Siringonas, the Greek Red Cross, EKAB, police forces and dozens of volunteers. Meals, first‑aid and medical assistance were provided on site.
Firefighting operations combined ground crews, two aerial helicopters refuelled from the Faneromeni dam and support from local residents, tractors and other agricultural machinery. Mayor Grigoris Nikolidakis inspected the firefighting effort in person. As the fire was contained, evacuees were gradually returned to Agia Galini, while the municipality remains on heightened readiness for any further incidents.
