Faith Hedgepeth murder trial enters second day of jury selection

Jury selection continued for the second day in the murder trial of Faith Hedgepeth at the Durham County Courthouse. The proceedings aim to seat a jury capable of remaining impartial despite the high-profile nature of the case, which stems from the 2012 killing of the 19-year-old in her Durham apartment.

Miguel Salguero Olivares, 33, faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree rape, and first-degree sexual offense. Prosecutors allege that DNA found on the murder weapon linked Olivares to the crime nine years after the incident.

During the selection process, attorneys questioned potential jurors regarding their prior knowledge of the case and media coverage. One potential juror was excused after becoming emotional while discussing a personal connection to similar violent crimes. Additionally, Judge Keith Gregory denied a defense objection regarding the prosecution's use of the term ‘victim’ to describe Hedgepeth.
