Faith Hedgepeth murder trial focuses on DNA and forensic evidence
The murder trial of Miguel Salguero Olivares, accused of the 2012 killing of UNC student Faith Hedgepeth in Durham, North Carolina, has centered on forensic evidence and investigative procedures.
Prosecutors presented DNA and fingerprint evidence, including a male DNA profile linked to the murder weapon and fingerprints on a wine bottle found at the scene. Forensic scientist Summer Maffett testified that a palm print and a left thumb print on the bottle matched Olivares.
Defense attorneys have challenged the investigation, questioning former lead investigator Johnnie Britt regarding uncollected evidence, such as hand towels and a bathroom trash can. Britt testified that while certain items like a vehicle gas cap could have been tested, such actions would not negate the DNA evidence recovered from the apartment or the victim's body.
