Fajar and Senja Utama Solo celebrate nearly 50 years of service

The Fajar Utama Solo and Senja Utama Solo train services are approaching nearly five decades of operation on the Jakarta-Surakarta route. The Senja Utama Solo service first began on October 14, 1978, originally connecting Solo Balapan to Gambir using business-class carriages manufactured by Goša from Yugoslavia.

Over the decades, the service has evolved significantly. The route eventually split into two distinct services based on travel time: Fajar Utama Solo for morning departures from Jakarta to Solo, and Senja Utama Solo for evening departures from Solo to Jakarta. Both services currently operate via Yogyakarta and Purwokerto.

The service has undergone various modernizations, including the introduction of executive classes and the transition from imported Yugoslavian carriages to domestically produced stainless steel rolling stock by PT INKA. As of January 31, 2025, the services utilize the latest generation of mixed executive and economy carriages manufactured in Madiun, marking a shift toward national industrial independence in the railway sector.
