Fake Google Chrome app appeared as sponsored result on Play Store

A counterfeit version of Google Chrome appeared on the Google Play Store, securing over 100,000 downloads and appearing as a sponsored advertisement above the authentic browser in search results. The fraudulent application was developed by Hizbartech rather than Google.

Reports indicate the app underwent an identity change to bypass initial scrutiny. It was originally listed on August 22 as a game titled ‘Ball Bounce’ before rebranding to ‘Google Chrome’ on September 30. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in how software is distributed and promoted within the Android ecosystem, as the platform allowed a developer to pay for visibility while impersonating a major brand.

While the exact number of users who downloaded the app under false pretenses is unclear, security experts recommend that users verify both the developer name and the package name before installation. Those who may have installed the 42 MB file or the previous version of ‘Ball Bounce’ are advised to remove it via their device settings.
