WhatsApp impersonator reaches 500,000 downloads on Google Play
A fraudulent application impersonating WhatsApp has been identified on the Google Play Store, accumulating over 500,000 downloads before its removal. The fake app, published by a developer account named ‘Agment Assets sallu’, utilized the official WhatsApp name, icon, screenshots, and descriptions to deceive users.
Reports indicate the malicious app bypassed security filters by utilizing Google Play’s ‘Early Access’ program, which hides public user reviews and prevents early detection of suspicious activity. The app also appeared prominently in search results through sponsored advertisements, leading users to believe it was the official service.
While there is currently no definitive evidence confirming data theft or specific malware payloads, experts warn that unofficial versions of WhatsApp cannot guarantee privacy or security. This incident follows a similar occurrence involving a fake Google Chrome app that reached 100,000 downloads. Security professionals advise users to verify the official developer, ‘WhatsApp LLC’, and avoid downloading apps through sponsored search results.
