Falcón faces humanitarian concerns in Coro
The state of Falcón, Venezuela, is facing significant social and humanitarian challenges across its prison, health, and religious sectors.
The Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) has reported severe human rights violations at the Coro Penitentiary Community. The facility is experiencing a 195% overcrowding rate, housing approximately 1,700 inmates in a space designed for 870. Reports indicate systemic issues including lack of potable water, electricity, and food, alongside allegations of extortion networks and institutional complicity in punishing inmates who cannot meet internal debts.
In the public health sector, residents in Coro have reported a critical lack of medical assistance. Recent testimonies highlight instances where patients were unable to receive emergency care at local clinics and diagnostic centers due to a lack of medical personnel and broken essential equipment, such as blood pressure monitors.
In contrast to these crises, the religious community is preparing for the 18th Pilgrimage of Promises. Thousands of devotees are expected to march toward the Santo Cristo de Guasare Sanctuary. Local authorities and private transport sectors are coordinating logistics to facilitate the movement of pilgrims during the early morning hours.
