Falcon 9 upper stage crashes into lunar surface

A spent 4,000-kilogram (8,800-pound) Falcon 9 upper stage crashed into the lunar surface near the Einstein Crater on August 5, 2026. The impact, occurring at approximately 8,700 kilometers per hour, created a dust plume visible from Earth and added to the estimated 200 tons of manmade material currently on the moon.

The incident highlighted operational risks for lunar infrastructure. South Korea’s Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) reported that the decaying orbit of the hardware posed a potential hazard to their Danuri spacecraft. To avoid a collision, KARI mission planners executed an orbital maneuver in mid-July to shift the spacecraft’s position.

Experts note that as lunar exploration intensifies through both national agencies and private companies, the lack of international governance regarding cislunar operations is becoming a critical issue. The crash follows other unplanned lunar impacts, such as a Chinese Long March 3C rocket stage that hit the moon's far side four years prior.
