SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage crashes into Moon near Einstein crater

A SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage accidentally collided with the Moon near the Einstein crater on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The impact occurred at a speed of approximately 8,700 km/h, creating a new crater estimated to be between 17 and 30 meters wide.

South Korea’s Danuri orbiter captured high-resolution before-and-after images of the impact site, documenting the darkened terrain and ejected material. Simultaneously, astronomers using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile detected a plume of sodium and lithium gases released during the collision, which lasted for five to ten minutes.

SpaceX officials stated the crash was unintentional, caused by a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces altering the rocket's trajectory. The rocket stage, which weighed approximately 4 tons, had been in orbit since its January 15, 2025, launch. Scientists view the event as a unique opportunity to study lunar surface dynamics and the behavior of space debris, while the incident has also renewed discussions regarding the protection of the lunar environment from human-made contamination.
