Falkland Islands and Calabria face upcoming referendums
In the Falkland Islands, residents are calling for a referendum regarding a massive salmon farming project. The proposal by Unity Marine, a joint venture between local company Fortuna and Denmark-based F-land Aps, aims to establish sixteen facilities capable of producing 50,000 tonnes of salmon annually. While the project promises £35 million for the local economy—approximately 11 percent of the GDP—and 133 new jobs, opponents raise concerns regarding environmental pollution and ecosystem sustainability.
In Italy, President Roberto Occhiuto has signed a decree scheduling a popular referendum for November 29, 2026, to discuss amendments to the Statute of the Calabria region. The legality of the vote remains subject to a pending judicial decision, as the Tar of Catanzaro is set to rule on a challenge regarding the referendum's admissibility on September 2.
