Falkland Islands halts new permanent residence permits for up to 12 months

The Falkland Islands Executive Council approved a temporary suspension of all new applications for Permanent Residence Permits (PRP) for a period of up to 12 months, with the halt taking effect in late July 2026. The pause is intended to allow a full review of the points‑based assessment framework and the annual quota that limit the number of permits granted each year.

The review follows a substantial revision of the immigration system in 2021 that broadened access and led to a sharp rise in applications. Existing permit holders are not affected; only first‑time applicants are barred from submitting new requests during the suspension. The Falkland Islands Government said arrangements are in place to support any employees directly impacted by the freeze.

Findings from the review and any recommended changes will be presented to the Executive Council for a final decision on whether the criteria and quota should be adjusted to better align with the territory’s economic and population objectives.
